Description: CAIA New York Educational Event: 50 Years of Rising to Challenges: The Past, Present and Future of the Endowment Model
Presentation and Fireside Chat with Mark Anson, PhD, CFA, CAIA, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Investment Officer, Commonfund.
When man landed on the moon in 1969, we conquered one of the most momentous challenges in human history. 1969 also proved to be a momentous year for college and university endowments when McGeorge Bundy, then President of the Ford Foundation, challenged the conventional approach to stewarding endowment capital. The reports he commissioned permanently changed fiduciary laws and investment approaches and paved the way for institutions to adopt the alternatives-heavy “endowment model” investment practices employed by many institutions today. To set the stage for the discussion, Cathleen Rittereiser, Executive Director of the Commonfund Institute, will give a short presentation describing the legacy of the Ford Foundation studies. Then, she will host a fireside chat with Commonfund CEO and CAIA board member Mark Anson. In a wide-ranging, forward-looking conversation, they will examine the state of the endowment model today, how the role of hedge funds and other alternative investments continues to evolve, and how investors can meet the challenge of stewarding capital into 2069 and beyond.
