Description:

CAIA Netherlands
From Pension Reform to Portfolio Reform: Why Leading Pension Investors are Moving Beyond
Strategic Asset Allocation

As the Netherlands transitions to a new pension system, significant attention is being paid to governance, implementation, and the transfer of accrued rights. Less attention is being given to a more fundamental question:

Does a new pension contract require a new investment framework?

Many pension funds continue to organize investment decisions, risk budgets, and governance structures around asset classes and strategic asset allocation. Yet internationally, an increasing number of leading asset owners are exploring the Total Portfolio Approach (TPA), which evaluates every investment according to its contribution to total portfolio objectives rather than solely the asset classes.

The Dutch pension transition presents a unique opportunity to revisit how investment risk is defined and managed. As pension outcomes become increasingly visible at participant level, questions around participant outcome risk, lifecycle investing, and total portfolio decision-making become increasingly relevant.

Join CAIA Netherlands, in collaboration with WTW and PGGM, as we explore whether the Dutch pension transition could be more than a regulatory and operational transformation. Could it also provide an opportunity to fundamentally rethink how pension portfolios are constructed and managed?
