 The 3rd Annual Calgary Alternative Investment Forum
Jointly hosted by CAIA Canada West, CFA Society Calgary and AIMA Canada, the Calgary Alternative Investment Forum presents thought leadership and education in alternatives. This year's focus is "Investing in the Artificial Intelligence Boom". We will discuss how the race to build the computing, power, data, and connectivity behind artificial intelligence is creating a new generation of investment opportunities and what the challenges are. The Forum will be followed by a networking reception, providing attendees with the opportunity to connect with peers from across the industry.

Nicolas Boningre
Job Title: Portfolio Manager
Organization: TELUS Health
Nicolas is a Senior Portfolio Manager with the OCIO team at TELUS Health Investment Management, where he provides investment consulting and discretionary portfolio management services to institutional clients, including pension plans and endowments. With over 23 years of investment experience, he specializes in global asset allocation and portfolio construction for institutional investors. Prior to joining TELUS Health, Nicolas spent most of his career at Natixis Investment Managers in Paris as a Multi-Asset Portfolio Manager within the Global Asset Allocation and Client Solutions team, overseeing corporate retirement plans and other institutional mandates. He also served as an Investment Advisor at Manulife Wealth and worked as an independent consultant specializing in commodities and trade finance. Nicolas holds a Master's degree in Economics and Finance and is a Chartered Investment Manager (CIM).
John Courtliff
Organization: ICM Asset Management
John Courtliff is Chief Executive Officer and a Partner of ICM Asset Management and a Portfolio Manager of ICM Investment Management Inc. Mr. Courtliff joined ICM in 2011 and became CEO in 2022. Mr. Courtliff has over 15 years of investment industry experience, beginning his career in investment banking before transitioning to real estate asset and investment management. His experience includes structuring complex domestic and cross-border transactions and investment vehicles, underwriting and closing investment opportunities in the U.S., Mexico and Canada, and portfolio/fund management.
Ryan Davies
Organization: Manulife
Ryan is a senior portfolio manager on the U.S small-cap equity team, where he is responsible for portfolio construction and the integrity of the team’s research process. His other responsibilities include conducting fundamental research on companies in the technology and communication services sectors. Prior to joining the firm, Ryan spent nearly 14 years as a small-cap senior analyst at Cortina Asset Management, focused on technology stocks and, before that, he was an analyst at U.S. Bank and Montgomery Asset Management. Ryan began his career as an accountant at PricewaterhouseCoopers, and he holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.
Thomas Holloway
Organization: University of Calgary
Thomas Holloway has been a CFA charterholder since 2010. He's been a professional investor in quant and fundamental equity, fixed income, and asset allocation and as a client-facing PM and asset owner trustee. He's a director for three non-profit boards and an advisor to the City of Calgary Investment Portfolio. This summer he had his first venture exit from his personal portfolio! He joins us today from the University of Calgary's Haskayne School of Business where he is a finance professor and supervisor of the CPMT. He's never been a gold bug, but the Holloways own some cattle, just in case. Outside of work, Tom is probably running.
Stephen Kallir
Organization: Bluesky Equities
Stephen Kallir is Chief Investment Officer at Bluesky Equities. As CIO, Stephen leads investment strategy and risk management across the firm's full multi-asset portfolio. In addition to his core role at Bluesky, Stephen also serves as Portfolio Manager for the Hunter Family Foundation, a private charitable organization focused within Alberta. He has been with the firm since 2019.
Prior to Bluesky, Stephen spent several years as a Senior Analyst at Wood Mackenzie, a global energy research firm, where he provided financial valuation and commercial analysis across multiple resource themes and companies in Canada. Earlier in his career, he worked as a subsurface engineer for a major Canadian oilsands producer. Stephen is a CFA Charterholder, a registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Alberta, and holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering with distinction from the University of Alberta.
Peter Kinkaide
Organization: Raintree Wealth Management
Peter Kinkaide first joined Raintree in 2012 as the Managing Director of Raintree Corporate Finance. Now, as CEO of Raintree Wealth Management, Peter is responsible for the direction and oversight of the company. He brings his tremendous attention to detail, focus, and business experience to his role while maintaining the core values built within Raintree Capital Inc. He is also an Advising Representative (Portfolio Manager) with Raintree Wealth Management. He continues to lead the development of the Corporate Finance division to complement Raintree Financial Solutions’ existing private brokerage offering. Peter Kinkaide oversees investment-banking execution over all offerings and has developed a separate practice with a focus on arranging capital for institutional transactions and completing mergers & acquisitions. In 2003, Peter joined MNP LLP in Edmonton, within its corporate finance division. He moved to Calgary in 2005 as an Associate, and was then promoted to Vice President. He spent 2008 in London, UK, working as an Associate Director with Baker Tilly Corporate Finance, leading transactions overseas. In 2009, he returned to Calgary as Vice President & Director of MNP Corporate Finance. While still at MNP, Peter returned to Edmonton in 2011. Peter graduated with distinction from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Commerce degree and earned the Chartered Financial Analyst designation in 2006.
Stephanie Liu
Organization: iSquared Capital
Stephanie Liu is a Managing Director at I Squared Capital, a leading independent global infrastructure investment manager. She is responsible for capital raising and investor relations across Canada, partnering with institutional investors on infrastructure and other private market investment opportunities. Prior to joining I Squared Capital, Stephanie led capital raising for Macquarie Asset Management's Canadian business, overseeing fundraising across the firm's private markets platform, including infrastructure, green investments, real estate, private credit, and agriculture. Before transitioning to investor relations, Stephanie spent more than a decade as an infrastructure investment professional at CVC DIF and Manulife Investment Management. During this time, she was involved in the origination, execution, asset management, and realization of infrastructure investments across multiple sectors and geographies. Stephanie holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from the Schulich School of Business at York University. She is a CFA charterholder and an active member of CFA Society Toronto
Benjamin Wu
Organization: HarbourVest Partners
Benjamin Wu joined HarbourVest in 2017 and focuses on sourcing, analyzing, and executing a full range of real assets investments. Benjamin joined the Firm from Borealis Infrastructure where he was responsible for evaluating and monitoring investment opportunities in energy, power, and other infrastructure as well as leading initiatives to pursue investments in adjacent sectors. Prior to that, he was with the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan’s private equity group and began his career in investment banking at BMO Capital Markets. He received a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Guelph.
