Ted Caldwell
Organization: Lookout Mountain Capital

Ted Caldwell established Lookout Mountain Capital, Inc. in 1993 to diversify his hedge fund portfolio, after investing in hedge funds for a decade. At a time when there were no industry newsletters or databases, Caldwell published the lucrative LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN HEDGE FUND REVIEW from 1994 through 1996 to encourage fund managers to find him. The newsletter facilitated introduction to numerous managers and other players from early decades of the industry, including many of Alfred Jones’s portfolio managers. The trauma of 1994 for most hedge funds and their investors led him to focus on failures as much as successes over the prior decades. Caldwell coined and published the name “Jones model funds” to separate the original hedge strategy from a plethora of new alternatives claiming the “hedge fund” moniker. Caldwell has also been published in various investment journals and books. Prior to founding LMC, he developed and brokered commercial real estate. He received his BA (‘73) and MBA (‘77) from the University of Denver.
