Michel Cormier
Organization: Bentall Kennedy


Michel is a Senior Vice President and Associate Portfolio Manager of the Bentall Kennedy Prime Canadian Property Fund, taking a leading role in portfolio strategy and analytics, investor and consultant relations, and business development. He also serves as Portfolio Manager of the Canadian Real Estate Plus Fund for DC pension plans and is responsible for a diversified separate account on behalf of a Canadian pension plan. Michel has progressed through roles of increasing responsibility in acquisitions, research, asset management and portfolio management since joining Bentall Kennedy as an Investment Analyst in 2000. Prior to Bentall Kennedy, he gained real estate investment experience at Colliers International and Morguard Investments Ltd. Michel earned a Bachelor of Commerce and Business Administration degree, specializing in real estate, at the University of British Columbia and is a CFA Charterholder.


Philip Falls
Organization: PBI Actuarial Consultants


Philip Falls, B. Comm. (Hons), MBA, CFA, ICD.D, is a Senior Investment Consultant with PBI and has over 30 years of pension and investment industry experience. He is currently consulting to half a dozen pension plans, endowment trusts, and other trust funds across Canada. Philip has been responsible for designing and implementing investment and risk management solutions dealing with plan asset and liability issues. He has significant experience with both conventional and alternative investment assets classes and the design of investment products and strategies. Philip is the Leader of the Investment Consulting Practice and works in Vancouver, BC. Prior to joining PBI, as head of investments for several Canadian corporations and trusts, he advised and made investment decisions for public, corporate and multiemployer pension plans as well as for endowment and insurance funds with a variety of customized investment and risk mandates. Philip has an MBA (Finance) from the University of Western Ontario, a B. Comm. (Honors Economics) from Concordia University and holds both the CFA and ICD.D designations. Philip is a past Director of the ACPM (Association of Canadian Pension Management) and member of the Pension Investment Association of Canada’s (PIAC) Investment Practices Committee. He is currently a part-time instructor (Finance) with the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT)


Yuming Fu
Organization: National University of Singapore


Yuming Fu is a Dean’s Chair associate professor in the Department of Real Estate, School of Design and Environment, National University of Singapore. His research work in the areas of urban economics, regional economic development, real estate market and housing policy has been published in leading academic journals such as American Economic Review, Management Science, Journal of Urban Economics, Journal of Regional Science, Regional Science and Urban Economics, Real Estate Economics, and Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics. He championed multidisciplinary research to tackling urban challenges during his tenure as the school’s vice dean of research from 2010 to 2016. He is a Fellow of Weimer School of Advanced Studies in Real Estate and Land Economics and served on the board of the American Real Estate and Urban Economics Association (AREUEA). He is an editorial board member of AREUEA's journal Real Estate Economics.


Andrey Pavlov
Organization: Simon Fraser University (SFU)


Andrey D. Pavlov specializes in real estate finance at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, BC, where he is professor of finance. His research is on mortgage-backed securities pricing and commercial and residential market risk management. He has also worked on the modeling of aggressive lending practices, risk management for publicly traded real estate companies, mortgage and equity securitization, and mortgage default risk. He earned his Ph.D. from the Anderson School at the University of California, Los Angeles (1999) and was a visiting Associate Professor of Real Estate at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania during the 2006 – 2008 period. Since then he has continuously taught real estate finance for numerous Wharton Executive Education programs. He is a fellow of the Zinman Real Estate Center at UCLA, a winner of the Homer Hoyt Advanced Studies Institute Best Dissertation Award (2000), and a post-doctoral honoree of the Homer Hoyt Advanced Studies Institute (2005). Professor Pavlov has a wide range of academic and industry- oriented publications. He is a member of the editorial boards of Real Estate Economics and the Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics. He is a sought-after speaker, author, and consultant for both the public and private sectors. He has recently consulted for the U.S. Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation, major mortgage lenders, banks, insurers, and hedge funds.


John Purcell
Organization: QuadReal


John joined QuadReal as Executive Vice President, Canadian Real Estate in February 2017. He focuses on driving performance and growth of the Canadian property portfolio, including investment, development and portfolio management activities. He was formerly Executive Vice President & Portfolio Manager of Bentall Kennedy, responsible for overall portfolio performance and asset management activities of the commercial and multi-residential properties managed by Bentall Kennedy on behalf of bcIMC. Previously, he was a senior executive of a Canadian REIT, focused on investment and management in the hotel sector. John started his career as a lawyer with Davies, Ward, Phillips & Vineberg in Toronto, where he participated in numerous leading real estate financing and restructuring transactions. John holds an MBA from the University of British Columbia, an LL.B from the University of Toronto, and a B.A. Economics from the University of Saskatchewan.


Joshua Varghese
Organization: CI Investments


Joshua Varghese co-manages approximately $4 Billion of global real estate securities at Signature Global Asset Management, a division of CI Investments. The real estate positions are housed within Signature’s award winning balanced mandates and REIT-focused funds. The portfolio focuses on strong management teams who demonstrate a consistent ability to compound capital within the real estate sector. Joshua has 13 years of financial industry experience including 8 years specializing in global property. Joshua holds a Bachelor of International Business and the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.
