The 2nd Victoria Alternative Investment Outlook Forum
hosted by CAIA Vancouver and CFA Society Victoria 
 
The Forum will feature leaders from across the industry to discuss the changing landscape of alternatives, risks, opportunities and trends.
 
An industry overview will be followed by moderated panels focusing on alternative strategies, private equity and private debt. This year we are introducing a workshop ahead of the Forum. The afternoon will conclude with a cocktail reception.

The panel will discuss Alternative Strategies and the reasons for using the new Liquid Alternatives vs. traditional Hedge Funds. Coming from hedge fund shops specializing in fixed income/credit strategies, Ann and Conner will also share with us the opportunities and challenges they see in the credit market. Steve will share his observations and opinion from an allocator's perspective.

Steven Adang

Mr. Adang is the President and founder of Anchor Pacific Investment Management Corp, a fully independent investment firm and Outsourced CIO (OCIO) providing sophisticated full-access investment platforms and customized solutions for high net worth and multi-generational families, family offices, financial advisors, foundations, endowments, pension plans, and other institutions. Andrew Blazenko
Organization: Sequoia Mergers & Acquisitions


Andrew is a partner of Sequoia Mergers & Acquisitions, and M&A advisory firm that focuses on selling private middle-market businesses in BC and Ontario. He has seen the resurgence of private equity first hand, as they have been able to impress selling business owners by not only matching strategic company purchasers in valuation but also gaining their trust that they will be stewards of the business' legacy. Andrew holds Chartered Business Valuator (CBV) and Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designations. Andrew and his wife just had a baby named Zoey. He enjoys taking her on walks and inconveniencing everyone else in the restaurants. He also sneaks out to play at least one tennis match per week.


Rene Dinter
Organization: BMO Global Asset Management


Rene Dinter has extensive industry knowledge in investment analysis, portfolio construction, trading of equities, fixed income, foreign exchange, options, ETFs and mutual funds. He is known for his attention to detail and consultative approach in providing support and education to advisors and portfolio managers. For over 12 years Rene has primarily focused on ETF business development. He also has experience in structured notes, closed end and mutual funds. He holds a Derivative Market Specialist (DMS) designation and extensive list of investment industry courses. Rene is a graduate of York University, BA with Honours focused on Economics, Psychology and Business Fundamentals.


Ann Glazier Rothwell
Organization: RP Investment Advisors LP


Ann Glazier Rothwell has more than 25 years of experience in Canadian capital markets and alternative investment strategies. Prior to joining RP Investment Advisors LP in 2012, Ms. Glazier Rothwell was the Founder & Chief Investment Officer of Alpha Scout Capital Management, a Canadian focused fund of hedge funds and Vice President & Director of the Alternative Investment Strategy and Proprietary Trading Group at TD Newcrest. Ann began her career at RBC DS in Fixed Income sales and trading later moving to institutional equity sales and proprietary trading in Toronto and New York with RBC DS, First Marathon/National Bank Financial and Newcrest Capital. In 2015, Ann was named one of 50 Leading Women in Hedge Funds by the Ernst & Young and Hedge Fund Journal’s global survey. Ms. Glazier Rothwell is a Chartered Financial Analyst®, a Leslie Wong Fellow of the UBC Portfolio Management Foundation and holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia. Ann currently sits on The University of Victoria Foundation Board and The Sauder School of Business Faculty Advisory Board. She is also a Governor of St. Michaels University School and the Vivat Foundation.


Aaron Papps
Organization: British Columbia Investments


Aaron Papps is a Senior Portfolio Manager within the Private Equity Group of BCI, focused on the Industrials and Energy sectors. With $153.4 billion of managed assets as of March 31, 2019, BCI is one of Canada's largest institutional investors within the global capital markets. Prior to joining BCI in 2017, Aaron accumulated 15 years of investment banking experience at global investment banks, advising on over $50 billion of M&A transactions and a wide variety of financing and capital markets transactions. From 2011-2017, Aaron was Managing Director, Head of Canadian Energy Investment Banking at Morgan Stanley. Prior to that, Aaron worked for 10 years at Merrill Lynch as an investment banker advising oil and gas, power and fertilizer companies based in western Canada. Aaron holds the CFA designation (2003) and was called to the New York State Bar in 2001. Aaron graduated from the Schulich School of Business and Osgoode Law School at York University (MBA/LLB) in 2000 and from the University of Ottawa (Bachelor of Administration) in 1996.


Sean Rogister
Organization: Cortland Credit Group Inc.


Sean Rogister has more than 20 years of experience leading investment teams in fixed income strategies that included private lending exposures in emerging and developed countries around the world. Having built and led investment management businesses at world-class financial institutions, most notably managing the fixed income asset class for Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan ($100 billion plus fund), Sean possesses a global and institutional perspective as well as possessing the unique knowledge base of how to manage a successful debt-based investment strategy. In his role as CEO at Cortland Credit, Sean oversees the investment management while ensuring the integrity of the firm’s policy is grounded on Cortland’s core beliefs.


Conner Sura
Organization: Lawrence Park Asset Management Ltd.


Conner is Co-Head of Retail Sales at Lawrence Park Asset Management with core responsibilities of product development, product strategy and distribution through the national advisor channel. Conner’s business development role includes relationship management of various institutional and family office clients across Canada. Conner works closely with the portfolio management team to provide Lawrence Park’s clients with portfolio analytics and relevant portfolio solutions suitable for the changing fixed income environment. Before joining Lawrence Park, Conner held various roles at CI Investments, in sales and a marketing strategy capacity. Conner is a CFA charterholder and has an educational background in mechanical engineering.


Michael White
Organization: Picton Mahoney Asset Management


Mike White is responsible for Picton Mahoney's multi-asset strategies, which include the Picton Mahoney Diversified Strategies Fund, the Picton Mahoney Fortified Multi-Strategy Alternative Fund and the Picton Mahoney Fortified Multi-Asset Fund. Mike has over twenty years of experience in capital markets, active management and investment counselling. He is a CFA charterholder and holds a Bachelor of Arts, History with a Finance and Economics Stream from Western University.


Andrew Zimcik
Organization: CC&L Financial Group


Andrew is a partner, portfolio manager and member of the Fundamental Equity team at CC&L Investment Management in Vancouver, which is responsible for the management of approximately $14 billion in assets in Canadian equities across large cap, small cap, equity income and market neutral strategies. CC&L Investment Management is part of the Connor, Clark and Lunn Financial Group, one of Canada’s largest independently owned asset managers, responsible for approximately $79 billion in assets for institutional and individual investors. Prior to joining CC&L, Andrew worked in Toronto and London, UK in both the private and public equity markets for two Canadian bank-owned investment dealers. Andrew graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University with a Bachelor of Business Administration and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.
