Emerging Manager Series - featuring Cable Car Capital
 
Join us for the first in a series of educational events featuring local emerging managers who specialize in highly nuanced alternative investment strategies. Throughout the series we will have in-depth conversations about the successes and challenges facing emerging managers such as : differentiating investment strategies, research, identifying alpha opportunities across asset classes, raising capital, and launching a new fund

Our first event features Jacob Ma-Weaver, founder of Cable Car Capital, a Bay Area fund launched in 2013 whose primary investment strategies are highly concentrated long-short positions, utilizing deep forensic accounting to identify bad actors, and more recently allocating capital in the cryptocurrency space.

Bill Kelly, CEO of CAIA Association, will also be in attendance and will engage in a Q&A session with the audience.

Bill Kelly

William (Bill) J. Kelly is the CEO of the CAIA Association. Bill has been a frequent industry speaker, writer, and commentator on alternative investment topics around the world since taking the leadership role at the CAIA Association in January, 2014. Previously, Bill was the CEO of Boston Partners and one of seven founding partners of the predecessor firm, Boston Partners Asset Management which, prior to a majority interest being sold to Robeco Group in Rotterdam in 2002, was an employee-owned firm. Bill’s career in the institutional asset management space spans over 30 years where he gained extensive managerial experience through successive CFO, COO and CEO roles. In addition to his current role, Bill is a tireless advocate for shareholder protection and investor education and is currently the Chairman and lead independent director for the Boston Partners Trust Company. He has previously served as an independent director and audit committee chair for ’40 Act Mutual Funds and other financial services firms. He is also currently an Advisory Board Member of the Certified Investment Fund Director Institute which strives to bring the highest levels of professionalism and governance to independent fund directors around the world. A member of the board of the CAIA Association, Bill also represents CAIA in similar capacities via their global partnerships with other associations and global regulators. Bill began his career as an accountant with PwC and is a designated Audit Committee Financial Expert in accordance with SEC rules.


Jacob Ma-Weaver

Prior to founding Cable Car, Jacob Ma-Weaver worked in corporate, long-only, and long/short contexts. With more than eight years of investment-related professional experience and a lifelong interest in investing, Jacob is an experienced financial analyst and market participant. Jacob began his career as a Corporate Finance Business Analyst in the Corporate Performance Center at McKinsey & Company in New York before moving to San Francisco, where he helped cover global retail and telecom companies at Dodge & Cox, a $200 billion mutual fund known for its value orientation. Jacob was later employed as a generalist long/short analyst at Amici Capital, formerly known as Porter Orlin, one of the original Jones-model hedge funds founded in 1976. Jacob graduated from Columbia University with a BA in Comparative Literature & Society and Economics, cum laude, and an MA in Statistics. He is fluent in German and proficient in Mandarin Chinese. Jacob is also a CFA charterholder.
